Leading early detection of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s Disease since 2005

The MoCA Test

Now the leading screening tool for cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and many other conditions, the MoCA Test was originally developed by Dr. Ziad Nasreddine, a cognitive neurologist seeking a faster, more accurate way to assess multiple cognitive domains in his patients. After several iterations, the MoCA Test was validated in 2005 and has since been adapted into over 100 languages and specialized clinical applications.

In under 15 minutes, the 30-point tool evaluates key cognitive domains such as executive function, memory, language, attention, and visuospatial skills through 13 tasks based on validated neuropsychological constructs.

Today, the MoCA Test is included in clinical guidelines and toolkits worldwide. The 2021 World Alzheimer Report identified MoCA as the most widely used tool for detecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and a 2023 global Delphi consensus ranked it the #1 test among 53 tools for early Alzheimer’s detection (Ellison et al., 2023).

MoCA empowers healthcare professionals and researchers to detect cognitive impairment related to:

Alzheimer’s disease

Parkinson’s disease

Fronto-temporal dementia

Lewy Body Dementia

VCI/Stroke

Dozens of other conditions

Meet MoCA Cognition Founder

As a young person escaping a war-torn nation, Ziad Nasreddine came to North America. About a decade later, he completed medical school at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada. Dr. Nasreddine later completed a fellowship in Cognitive Neurology/Neurobehavior at UCLA and became a board-certified Neurologist.

In 1992, during his residency, Dr. Nasreddine recognized the need for a more comprehensive cognitive screening tool that could better serve clinical settings. He began the journey of creating his own, more efficient, and complete test. In 2005, Dr. Nasreddine finished validation of the first version of a more specialized assessment that could directly support hospitals and specialty clinics with high volume of patients: the Montreal Cognitive Assessment—or MoCA.

Along with his continued dedication to patients at his memory clinic, Dr. Nasreddine leads MoCA Cognition, a research and innovation-focused company driven to deliver the next generation of cognitive screening solutions.
